In Home Structured Prewiring or After the Fact

Structured Wiring can be described as centralizing all of your communication wiring in your home. In doing so, you combine all cables and wires and treat it as one wiring system. This can typically include for example a home network, video, telephone, audio, alarms and anything else you choose to include.

When having one centralized system of cables in your home, you can enjoy many advantages. For example, you have better configuration options. With a central wiring panel you can change how and what these cables are connected to and for what they are used for. Furthermore, you can isolate each cable easily from the rest of the others and test them for shorts and opens. Finally, you have a more consistent signal quality. This is because with all your cables being centralized in the central wiring panel, your cables can all be connecter to the same source and hence, get the same signal level.

As you see, structured wiring has many benefits. Therefore, it is important to plan it in advance should you want to take advantage of it. Setting up a centralized wiring panel after the fact can be difficult and costly, especially if the walls are insulated with spray foam. The best time to centralize all your wiring is obviously before the fact. You will then save costs and time and it is less complicated. So, whenever you consider to combining wiring, the best time would be to do it before the fact.

Further, we suggest to hiring a custom installer. If you ask your builder to do that, he will most probably opt for an electrician to do the work. However, if a custom installer will do the work, he will ensure, that audio cables are being separated from power cables for example. That would avoid hum and noises.
